Acer C720 Chromebook Review

We have been looking for some type of laptop to replace our way out-of-date Dell my wife had from her college days (2002). Yep that old!  The computer still worked as long as it was plugged in instead of using the battery.  We allowed our kids to use the computer since we didn't want them to ruin ours.

Our oldest, now 6, had been using it quite a bit.  The past few months he was unable to get onto certain web sites due to the incapability of the OS.  We couldn't update the flash drives or Java any more so the computer became useless.

My wife and I were trying to decide about getting another laptop for them or something a little more simple like the Chromebook.  After a little research and talking with my brother, Chris Pirillo, we decided on the Chromebook.  We don't have to worry about the kids downloading anything to the laptop and the security issues gives us a sound piece of mind.

We are very pleased with our choice of a laptop.  Our oldest loves getting on the interactive educational web sites to aid his learning.  I have not downloaded any apps for the Chromebook since he likes being on the internet games.  Please take a moment to watch my video review of what my thoughts were on the Acer C720 Chromebook.

I am an average computer "geek" and don't know all the fancy terms and processors but I wanted something simple.  If you are looking for a very simple laptop for kids or surfing the web for yourself then a Chromebook is worth it.

Exercise In A Fun Way

This is a fun activity I adapted from learning at TAHPERD a few years ago.  Any one can play this game even adults.  If you are looking for a new way to exercise and have a change of pace for your routine give this game and some of my other ones a try.

Who says exercising has to be boring or repetitive.  You could even turn it into a family workout.  Instead of using the spots you could use paper plates.   What are you waiting for go get active!

TeachPhysEd: Speed Ball

Fun game I created a few months ago.  Grades 4th and 5th seemed to enjoy it a lot.  This is a great game that middle school and high school students would enjoy.  You don't need a lot of equipment.  Just a tennis ball and hula hoop.

My coworker and I got very addicted to this game.  We spent some of our planning period playing it.  It involves hand-eye coordination, striking, and strategy thinking.  If you think of any adaptations please let me know!

Keep on moving,

Ben

Just waiting

As some of you may know our daughter has had some health issues. She has qualified for Medicaid and in turn WIC. Every once in a while we have to go to the WIC office so they can check her weight and talk with us.

We were given an appointment time of 5:30. I showed up 5 minutes early to fill out some paper work. As I am writing this post it is 6:00. I understand that things can run late, but the frustrating part is seeing employees leave the office with people waiting for their already late appointment.

No one here has told me they are running behind schedule. My kids are currently running around their office and I am letting them. They were pushing the chairs around the room but got board quickly. I'm usually pretty strick with behavior in public, but I am so disappointed in the staff here that I'm letting them be "crazy".

It's okay that they are running late since my time is not worth anything. At least in their minds. I could be home now working on my children's therapy homework, making dinner or cleaning the house, but instead I need to waist time sitting around.

I'm sure once our appointment is "over", we will have to sit around when it's done in order for them to fill out paper work. I am blessed with having the WIC program to help supply Viola with proper food. I just wish the process would be a little more on time.

As mentioned we just meet with the nurse and now have to wait some more. As we were heading back to the waiting room she mentions that the staff starts to leave around 5. I was pretty sadden to hear that since we have been waiting past our scheduled time. It would have only taken 5 minutes for one if those 4 staff members that left to check Viola out.  Soon we will be able to leave, go home (maybe before dinner), take baths and off to bed. Oh by the way it is now close to 6:30.

TeachPhysEd: Heros of Olympus

I created this game to celebrate one of my favorite book series.  Since Percy Jackson is a youth book my elementary students really loved this game and could relate to it since some of them have read the books.  This game would also be great for middle school students.  Take a look!

Weekend trip

Well I made to Iowa to visit my grandpa. He has been up and down with his health the last few days. I felt I needed to see him, so I packed up on Friday morning to take the drive. I pushed through rain, freezing rain, and snow but I'm glad I did. Looks like the weather will be tricky for me to travel back to Texas. I will have to keep an eye out.

When I get back I will load the exercises from the game I just posted to my YouTube channel (Fitness War). Sorry for any inconvenience but family comes first.

Update I found the picture of exercises.

Aaaahhhh! Some how my twitter account got messed with.  Seems kind of odd.  I love having to go through my accounts and changing my passwords.  Thanks who ever decided to intrude into my life.

Looking forward to this week.  We are in our scooter board unit and the students really enjoy the games.  I've got an idea brewing in my head of something I want to try but I have a few more details to work out before I have the students play.  I can't give details yet because if it works, I will probably have it posted to YouTube

Oh my goodness.  I keep forgetting to work on this blog.  Things are going by so fast.  Since my last post I have done so much.  I have created a new channel on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/ViolasStory) and now I have been working with others to get one started for TAHPERD.  I think it's a good step for our group and I think others will really like it.

Lately, I have been posting vlogs and it seems to be going well.  I record my week and compile it all into one video.  By doing the weekly vlogs I feel like I have more videos.  If I were to do daily ones there would only be 2 minute videos (my life isn't that interesting).  Feel free to check it all out at Coach Pirillo's Channel.
